When WordPress was first starting out it was mainly considered a blogging website tool. Giving bloggers an easy way to post information in a reliable and easy to use CMS (content management system). Since then WordPress has grown up a lot and is now used by over 50% of websites that are built using a CMS.

Out of the box WP has a lot of great features but is lacking in some key area’s including on page SEO (search engine optimization), page layout and navigation control. This is where the Genesis Framework comes in. Not only does it give WordPress a massive upgrade in these area’s but it also enhances the custom programming and template abilities giving web designers more functionality and tools at their disposal.

Here are some features that make using the Genesis Framework, along with WordPress the way to go when building a new website.

Search Engine Optimization

Genesis gives the web developer the ability to manage key SEO functions where before it took tricks to accomplish. For example, the ability to manage custom page titles, meta keywords and descriptions on a page by page basis greatly enhancing a pages code in a way that is great for search engines like Google.

Page Template Child Themes

To anyone who is familiar with WordPress knows that a great feature are the themes. Basically “skinning” WordPress with a custom design. But as a developer this can get tough to work with as the Bones of the website so to speak are different from theme to theme. This is where Genesis shines as the “bones” are standardized and all that is being customized are the visuals like custom graphics, page parameters and style sheets. This makes not only designing your website a more controlled operation it makes updating the design down the road a lot easier as you don’t need to rebuild the bones.

Plugins and Tools

As many know there are hundreds of plugins that have been created to enhance WordPress’ functionality. Everything from shopping carts, to calendars to photo galleries. But most websites need a standard set of tools that don’t come of of the box with WordPress. Fortunately, Genesis has a host of plugins that work perfectly with the framework like home page sliders, custom footer columns, custom sidebars and widgets.

Custom Programming

My personal favorite feature in Genesis is the ability to create custom individual page templates. Say you have a portfolio and you want it displayed like I do on my website. This is a custom grid loop using the built in WordPress blog engine. You will see the list of portfolio items and a unique display page. These are custom designed pages with custom fields for displaying any type of information you like. This takes using WordPress and repeating data way beyond just a blog and at the same time using the same tools within WordPress as you would a blog.

In conclusion, there is WordPress and then there is WordPress with the Genesis Framework. All websites built by 8 Sides Interactive come standard with the Framework so you know that when your site launches it has the features and code that sets your website apart.
